“And the secret garden bloomed and bloomed and every morning revealed new miracles.”
― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
One of the most magical wedding themes I can think of is one inspired by one of my favorite books I read as a young girl, The Secret Garden. There is just something irresistible about the notion of finding that secret overgrown door and finding behind it a world all your own where beautiful things grow. Recreating such sense of wonder can be so much fun for a wedding. Here I’ve chosen a motif of flourishing botanicals and skeleton keys, which hold a sense of wonder in themselves, as an object you can use throughout the wedding.
Collecting vintage keys at antique shops and estate sales, you’ll eventually have enough to use as special seating cards/favors, for décor, and they are very cute used in a boutonniere. Worn over the groom’s heart they can represent “the key to his heart.” You can also collect keys from online marketplaces such as Etsy, where you’ll find both vintage, and reproduction keys. This theme also provides the perfect setting in which to wear a special skeleton key diamond necklace, such as the one by 77 Diamonds. You could even give these as gifts to your bridesmaids.
A backyard garden works perfectly for this theme and if you don’t have that special little “secret garden” door, you can certainly build a temporary one at the entrance of the garden, which will give your guests a sense of enchantment and whimsy as they enter your celebration. Browse photos of garden doors to get ideas and if you’re up for it, here are some tips to create a secret garden of your own.
